![]() Sydney, with a population approaching 4 million is Australia’s largest city and the site of our first European settlement. It is a beautiful city located on one of the finest natural harbours in the world and with a unique skyline dominated by the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the famous Opera House, and the futuristic Centre Point Tower..
Dive Charter Operators regularly visit many of the excellent near Sydney dive sites: Flagstaff under the old Quarantine Station, the wreck of the Catherine Adamson, the Sponge Gardens, Old Mans Hat, Fairfax Lookout, North Head (renowned for its prolific fish life particularly large Blue Groper), Perfume Point, Cabbage Tree Wall, Manly Reef, Curl Curl Reef, Long Reef Wall, Ship Reef, the wreck of the SS Duckenfield, Inner South Head, Royal Sheppard, Chapel Steps, Gap Caves, the wrecks of the Dunbar and the Annie M Miller, Macquarie Wall, Rosa Gully, Dobroyd Head, Sea Dragons, the wreck of the clipper Centurion and the old tug Valiant. Other good spots around Sydney include the Whale Beach Caves, Bare Island, La Perouse, Fairlight near Manly, Clovelly, Wedding Cake Island, Cape Solander, Black Streak Reef, Jibbon Reef, and Wattamolla Reef south of Port Hacking. The wreck of the Tuggerah lies further offshore from Wattamolla. Sydney has some fine diving on the deep reefs on the Pacific Ocean coast north of the Heads in about 40m of water. One needs fairly specialised equipment to dive these deep reefs, including a good boat equipped with echo sounder. Until recently diving in these offshore areas had been limited to the few who owned suitable boats but now I is possible to book through one of many dive charter services.
